Indian Holy Ash

The holy ash represents Lord Siva. Smearing a dab of ash along with saffron on the forehead is symbolic of the union of Siva and Shakti. Elders always counsel their wards to do so before praying in the evenings in front of a lighted lamp. Its also used for purification and removing of unwanted energies.
